“This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then spontaneously the body heals itself.”
Dr. Ida P. Rolf
Dr Rolf earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1920. She went on to work in organic chemistry at the renowned Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Feeling frustrated that she could not resolve her family’s health issues; she began studying and experimenting with different modalities of healing and manipulation.
She left the US in 1927 and studied mathematics and physics and homeopathy in Switzerland. Upon returning to the US, Dr Rolf continued her exploration of other modalities including osteopathy, chiropractic medicine and yoga and Korzybski’s study of consciousness. Following her return to the US she developed Structural Integration over the next 30 years.
Dr. Rolf sought to find the answer to this question: "What conditions must be fulfilled in order for the human body-structure to be organized and integrated in gravity so that the whole person can function in the most optimal and economical way?"
She believed that structural imbalances in the body placed abnormal demands on muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments, thereby creating compensations throughout the body structure. She developed a systematic protocol to release these imbalances called the Ten Series.
“Some individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body, others as constant fatigue, yet others as an unrelentingly threatening environment. Those over forty may call it old age. And yet all these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored: they are off balance, they are at war with gravity.”
